Mettech Partners with UBC Materials and UBC Medicine to Develop Antiviral Coating Technologies

30-Jul-2020

Northwest Mettech Corporation, in partnership with UBC Materials and UBC Medicine, is working on the development of novel antiviral coating technologies to reduce the spreading of the contagious coronavirus.

The team at UBC and Mettech will study and develop coatings made from composite nanoparticles that can create long-lasting antiviral effects once applied onto high-touch surfaces in hospitals, long-term care facilities, dental clinics, and classrooms. As a result, virus landed on surfaces will live a shorter life.

The goal is to reduce spreading of Covid-19 by using antiviral coatings in senior care homes, hospitals, dental clinics, and classrooms.

This is a one-year project funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

01-Sep-2017

Mettech will be Exhibiting and presenting a paper titled “Axial Plasma Sprayed Yttrium Oxide Coatings for Semiconductor and Flat-Panel-Display Applications” (题目” 轴向进料等离子喷涂氧化钇涂层在半导体/平板显示制造装备中的应用”) by Zhaolin Tang at the International Thermal Spraying Seminar (ITSS) and China National Thermal Spraying Conference (CNTSC) (ITSS/CNTSC 2017), 12-15 September, 2017, Shenyang, China.

Abstract

Yttrium oxide has been commonly used as a protective coating material because it has strong resistance to plasma erosion with reducing the amount of reaction products generated during the semiconductor/flat-panel display fabrication process. Yttrium oxide coatings have been prepared with high power axial injection plasma spraying using both conventional sized powders and fine powder suspensions. The axial suspension plasma sprayed coatings have the advantages over commercial yttrium oxide coatings regarding its high density, high hardness, high anti-plasma erosion resistance and retention of smooth surface after plasma erosion.

Mettech Presenting at ITSC Shanghai 2016

01-May-2016

Mettech will be exhibiting and presenting a paper titled “Suspension Plasma Sprayed Ceramic Coatings for Various Emerging Applications” by Zhaolin Tang, at the International Thermal Spray Conference (ITSC) being held in Shanghai PRC, May 10-12, 2016.

Abstract

Suspension plasma spraying is gaining greater interest in emerging applications where advanced ceramic coatings are required. Mettech developed an axial injection plasma spraying (ASPS) coupled with an automatic suspension feed system and demonstrated its capability to overcome the complexities of the process and deliver quality coatings. By modification of process parameters including selection of powders, make-up of suspensions, and plasma conditions, the coating microstructures and properties can be tailored for emerging applications such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), plasma erosion resistant coatings, and advanced thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). Dense YSZ and Y2O3 coatings were achieved with high functional properties for SOFC and plasma erosion resistance applications, respectively. By contrast, very porous and columnar structured TBCs, similar to those deposited by electron beam-physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) have also been produced with ASPS.

Mettech will present a paper titled “Axial Suspension Plasma Spraying: Its Development and Application” by Zhaolin Tang at the Thermal Spray Suspensions & Solutions Symposium (TS4) Montreal, Quebec, December 2-3, 2015 at Hyatt Regency.

Abstract

Axial suspension plasma spraying (ASPS) is gaining considerable interest in commercial applications where advanced ceramic coatings are required. The presentation is aimed at describing complexities of the process and gaining a better understanding of the coating mechanisms. The effect of powders, suspension, atomization, plasma parameters, and coating process on properties of coatings were investigated. The coating microstructures and properties can be tailored for emerging applications such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), plasma erosion resistant coatings, and advanced thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). With ASPS by spraying liquid suspension containing fine powders, dense YSZ and Y2O3 coatings were achieved with high functional properties for SOFC and plasma erosion resistance applications, respectively. By contrast, very porous and columnar structured TBCs, similar to those deposited by electron beam-physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) have also been demonstrated with ASPS. This was possible thanks to modification of process parameters including selection of powders, make-up of suspensions, and plasma conditions. ASPS technology has been proven to be an economical route for TBCs on advanced turbine components.

Mettech to Present at the 5th International Workshop on Suspension and Solution Thermal Spraying October 3-5, 2011

25-Jun-2011

Mettech is pleased to announce that we will be presenting at the 5th International Workshop on Suspension and Solution Thermal Spraying, October 3-5, 2011 in Tours, France.

Abstract

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have been employed for many years to protect the metallic components of the hot sections of aerospace and land-based gas turbines against the high temperature environment. These coatings are generally made by either air plasma spraying (APS) or electron beam physical vapour deposition (EB-PVD). In general, EB-PVD TBCs have superior durability due to the columnar structure, but they are very expensive compared to APS TBCs. EB-PVD TBCs are used primarily in the most severe applications such as turbine blades and vanes in aircraft engines. This paper presents an economical process to make durable TBCs, called Axial Suspension Plasma Spray (ASPS). This technology combines Mettech's axial injection plasma process and automatic suspension feed system. The resulting TBCs exhibit a columnar structure with substantially equiaxed grains, instead of the typical lamellar structure with flattened particles for APS TBCs. Such structures allow the TBC to compensate for thermal expansion differences between it and the base material, resulting in excellent durability. The ASPS process presents a significant potential to replace EB-PVD for aircraft turbine parts and offers an economical method to deposit durable columnar TBCs.
